Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 – Could not open a connection to SQL Server

November 26, 2015

My colleague had shown a fairly common with the SQL Management Studio program throwing up the following error: –

Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 – Could not open a connection to SQL Server

This is when using the login name sa, the most common thing to look out for here is that to double check that you have got the right profile setup on the computer and that this profile has full right access to the database. This is what I had told my colleague, and this fixed half the problem.

The other half of the problem is in the SQL Management Studio, the connection to the TCP/IP is likely to be switched off, so you need to go to the SQL Configuration Manager, and just enable TCP/IP,VIA,Named Pipes

This usually fixes this error!
